82% decrease in Iranian exports to Turkey

A study of Iran-Turkey trade performance in the first seven months of this year shows that Iran’s exports to this western neighbor have decreased by 82%.

According to ISNA, since the beginning of this year, due to the outbreak of the Corona virus and the consequent restrictions, the amount of international trade among the different countries has significantly decreased, and Iran is no exception to this trend. However, the trade situation is different with various countries even in the Corona period.
The statistics of Iran’s trade released shortly before show that the volume of joint trade with Afghanistan has also increased in some areas this year, but at the same time the volume of joint trade with Turkey has fallen much more sharply than what the corona virus has caused.
The statistics show that in the first seven months of 2019, the total amount of trade between Iran and Turkey was more than 4 billion and 200 million dollars, of which more than 2 billion and 800 million dollars was Iran’s exports to Turkey and 1.3 billion dollars was Turkey’s exports to Iran. In the first seven months of 2020, the total trade between the two countries has reached 1.38 USD billion, which shows a decrease of 67% compared to the previous year. In this context, Iran has exported only $ 509 million to Turkey and the Turkish companies have sold about $ 878 million worth of goods to Iran, thus reducing Iran’s exports by about 82% and Turkey’s exports by about 37%.
A study of commodity trade between the two countries shows that the export of plastics and their components to Turkey is the main export of Iran to this country, and the decline in exports of petroleum products has been the main factor in reducing Iran’s exports to Turkey.
Among Turkish goods, hot water boilers, machinery and electronic devices, and its components and parts, are the main goods exported to Iran. During this period, Iran also bought fibers, tobacco, paper and wood and its components from Turkey.
The statistics from the Tehran Chamber of Commerce show that Turkey, which last year was one of Iran’s main trading partners, has given way to Afghanistan, given the serious decline in trade in recent months.
